Quintin Morris, 28 years wrongfully incarcerated. Kimberly Long, 8 years wrongfully incarcerated and mother of two. These are just a few people the California Innocence Project helped set free from wrongful incarceration. But there are many more still in prison. Our criminal justice system is deeply flawed. Timothy Atkins was incarcerated for 23 years for a crime he did not commit due to false eyewitness testimony. In 2007, Timothy was released after that same eyewitness recanted, causing the judge to overturn the decision. Once released, Timothy petitioned to be fairly compensated for the time he spent unjustly behind bars. His compensation request was rejected by the Victim Compensation & Government Claims Board. It took CIP 12 years to get Tim the compensation he deserves. Even in states where compensation is legislated, victims of wrongful convictions are often denied compensation because of technicalities or standards that limit the number of compensation awards. @ca_innocence is working to rectify these systematic issues and ensure those wrongfully convicted get the compensation they deserve.
