BREAKING NEWS! Historic Indigenous Victory: Oil and Mining Boom Halted in Ecuadorian Amazon! Following days of dialogue between Indigenous leaders and President Lasso, Ecuador’s Indigenous movement has achieved a historic victory for the climate and Indigenous rights – leading to the conclusion of the 18 day long national strike across Ecuador. In a major turn of events, President @LassoGuillermo has agreed to significant reforms of a presidential decree intended to expand mining (Executive Decree 151), including a commitment to not develop new mining projects on Indigenous lands and to guarantee respect for the Indigenous right to Free, Prior and Informed Consultation (FPIC). Additionally, he has agreed not to implement Executive Decree 95, which would have doubled oil production. This outcome meets two of the Indigenous movement’s central demands and, if the government keeps their word, will protect millions of acres of rainforest from extraction. This major climate victory is not only a result of the last 18 days of resistance, it is the outcome of decades of organizing by the Indigenous movement, personal sacrifice, and resilience in the face of state repression of Indigenous peoples’ constitutionally-granted right to protest. This news is a testament to the power of Indigenous leadership on climate action AND signals an upholding of Indigenous peoples’ right to FPIC. While this news gives us a lot to celebrate - the fight is not over. Hundreds of people remain wounded and criminalized by state forces in the aftermath of the strike. We must remain vigilant and keep up the pressure to ensure the government fulfills its commitments made throughout the dialogue.
