Khadija Abdoulaye lives in Bol, among the mottled delta of
lakes on the fringes of Lake Chad. This World Immunization Week, the five
countries bordering Lake Chad – Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Central
Africa Republic – will immunize more than 90 million children against polio in
synchronized immunization campaigns. The day before this photo was taken,
UNICEF-supported social mobilizers visited Khadija’s village and convinced her
of the need to protect her child against polio. So she remained at home on the
campaign day to ensure her only son was protected against the paralyzing
